Solid waste in the sewage network
This fact sheet complete the worksheet No. 7 Manual of agro-environmental plan (EAP). It outlines possible measures to correct aspects of your operation which is likely to harm the environment. In most cases, before implementing a measure, you need to learn more details, please consult the papers listed in the card and a technical adviser OMAFRA specialist agro-environmental plans (EAP).

All options are classed as remedial measures; compensatory factors; surveillance. Corrective measures for dealing with problems found on your operation and improve the rating to (3 or even 4). The compensatory factors are alternatives that will adequately address the concerns, but will not change the notes in the EFP work. Monitoring is only under specific circumstances and in accordance with the methods described in this form.

At the request of the Farm Environmental Coalition of Ontario, comprising the Federation of Agriculture Ontario, the Christian Farmers Federation of Ontario, AGCare and Ontario Farm Animal Council, the following persons participated in the preparation the fact sheet No. 7:

 MOE = MOE
MOHLTC = Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care
MMAH = Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing

Quantity of wastewater
Situation - problem: 7-1 Efficient water

By consuming less water in the house, it decreases the amount of wastewater that the plant must treat septic. It follows several vantages: lengthening the life of the installation, less frequent emptying of the pit and lower risk of contamination of surface and groundwater. Without forgetting that reduces pumping water into the wells and the energy bill.

Quality of wastewater
The rejection of solid waste in the sewage network, especially when using a shredder waste under the kitchen sink, greatly increases the burden on solids sent in the septic installation. The tank must be drained more often and scope purification receives a greater quantity of organic materials to "digest". This surcharge may entail the failure of the facility and, therefore, a high risk of contamination of surface water and groundwater.

Other treatment system
The system usually used to treat wastewater can be replaced by other systems, but they also require regular maintenance. Without proper maintenance, the entire plant may cease to function and contaminate surface and groundwater. Some treatment systems have less conventional mechanical or electrical components which must also be regularly serviced.

Follow a regular maintenance program:
* Make sure that the amount of wastewater sent into the system does not exceed the capacity for which it was designed, this is particularly important after installing a new bathroom or a spa in the house.

Sources of information:
* User's Manual installation of a septic (documentation provided by the seller of the installation).
* Advice on the use and maintenance of your septic tank, MMAH.
* Septic Smart: New Ideas for Household Septic Systems on Difficult Sites, OSCIA.

A storage tank with a capacity of more than nominal capacity (theoretical capacity you need), you leave a safety margin. A big reservoir does not need to be drained as often and is less likely to spill. It is recommended that the monitor to report leaks and equipped with an alarm system that is triggered when the content reaches a certain level, leaving some room until the arrival of the truck vidangeur). This prevents spillage and the risk of contamination of surface water. The regulation limits the use of storage tanks of wastewater and establishes criteria for design, installation and operation.

Reduce the amount of wastewater produced and regularly check the tanks and their level to detect leaks:
* Install an alarm system that signals when it is time to drain the reservoir and maintain it
* Made regularly reviewing the tank by a contractor licensed.

System wastewater treatment
The installation of a field treatment is necessary so that sewage will be properly processed and disseminated by the trenches in the soil. A septic system poorly designed or in poor condition creates a risk of contamination of surface and groundwater. A contamination of wells or surface water then threatens human health. The direct connection of a source of wastewater to a network of drainage areas is illegal. It is forbidden to channel wastewater to be sent elsewhere than in a septic system or other approved treatment system.
