saThe species, according to the nomenclature of the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) are classified in cash "missing", "endangered" (or endangered), "vulnerable", "rare "Or" uncertain ".

According to the account of wildlife French, established in late 1994 by the Secretariat flora-fauna of the National Museum of Natural History (invertebrates excluded), 531 species' breeding "(which recur regularly), 8 species have disappeared since 1850 , 71 species are "vulnerable" (29 birds), 38 species are "at risk" including 22 birds and mammals 9.

The categories proportionally more are threatened amphibians (35% of species of the class), freshwater fish (25% including migratory), mammals (24%, especially large carnivores, whales and bats ) And birds (15%, especially large raptors and waders).

At the top threats are primarily habitat destruction (natural habitats). And including the standardization of landscapes, loss of wetlands, tourism development and agricultural land and the destruction of spawning grounds.

Other threats: the use of pesticides, multiplied by 8 from 1959 to 1990 or fertilizer, multiplied by 4 from 1963 to 1990; "human pressure", of course, as well as the direct destruction such as hunting or fishing.

Since the Middle Ages, 35 species were introduced by humans (hence some economic risks, health and ecological), and 17 species have emerged naturally.

Defences exist (population monitoring, management contracts with farmers, etc.) and are applied, particularly in protected areas (national parks and nature reserves).
