Composition

Composting is beneficial in so many ways. The product of composting provides a soil rich in nutrients that is more beneficial to gardens and lawns than fertilizers. Compost is also cheaper than fertilizers and keeps some of our household kitchen wastes out of the landfill. What you need to get started:

  • A container that will keep the compost contained, yet allow air in. (Wooden pallets, or a piece of metal fence can work great) (You can also purchase an already-made container)

  • A pitchfork or shovel to turn the compost

  • Compost material (see chart below)

  • Composition tipa
Layer your materials in the container
  • Turn the layers regularly (weekly or monthly) to allow oxygen to circulate and encourage decomposition
  • Check the moisture level: If it’s too dry it will take longer to decompose- too wet and it will start to smell. Add water or dry materials as needed to balance the moisture level.
  • Add the finished product (this can take several months to a year) to your garden, flowers, etc

Pest and disease problems in gardens can seem like a mysterious challenge to many gardeners. In order to eliminate these challenges, it is important to understand that gardens are complex ecosystems that are influenced by gardening activities. Practicing good horticulture results in balanced, sustainable garden ecosystems with minimal pest and disease problems.

Ecosystems

An ecosystem is defined as an interacting system of living organisms and their environment. It is easy to see how a garden suits this definition. Gardens attract mammals, birds, insects, worms, microorganisms, fungus and bacteria that are in search of food and habitat. All of these organisms influence each other and their environment. Likewise, their environment has an influence on them. In a healthy ecosystem, all components are dependent on each other and exist in harmony. When organisms in our gardens proliferate in unbalanced proportions, disturbing the harmony, we call them pests.

The Clio Area Regional Planning Board wants to develop communities in northern Genesee County into one big "healthy community."
Consultant Nate Jonker recently pitched the idea to Thetford Township leaders, asking them to sign on for an April community-wide town hall meeting to develop a five-year Healthy Community plan.
"Clio is not as healthy a community as I thought we were," Jonker told township board members Monday, sharing statistics showing that 61 percent of adults age 45 and older in the 48420 ZIP code were classified as high risk for diabetes, up from 51 percent in 2003.
His group isn't just focused on physical health, but areas such as healthy business, healthy and safe schools, and economic health, to list a few.
"Others have tried to do healthy initiatives, but we want to make our entire community healthy," Jonker said.
That's good news to county health officials such as Robert Pestronk, director of Genesee County Health Department.

A lot has been said about the state of our community, its leaders and the residents who live here.
It is easy to criticize from the comfort of our homes. Just as people like to second-guess sports coaches from their armchairs, so we like to spew our “wisdom.”
Problem with that is, we really don’t have all the information to make the decisions that will affect so many people, primarily because we remain rooted in our armchairs, rather than be involved.
Rarely are decisions affecting so many easy to make.
