Garden
The hydroponics gardening allows more cheaply on our terraces
The concept of food sovereignty implies the active participation of citizens in a context where the cultivable land is scarce. Thus, terraces and balconies can be a feasible alternative. However, gardens on roofs require the implementation of technologies that are complex. This has led researchers to focus on new processes that allow growth to grow abundant vegetation cheaply.

Despite the presence of Mont-Royal and the St. Lawrence River, Montreal remains a city concrete which generates a very high proportion of urban heat islands, especially downtown. Unlike the cities of Toronto or Portland (the USA), our city still did not have a real political struggle against the islands of heat. Several speakers, with the front row organizations such as Alternatives, just trying to use the roofs of several public buildings in order to carry out innovative experiments.

Experiments innovative
Already, some public places were used to conduct experiments on greening surfaces built downtown. However, the technology of green roofs lends itself better to concrete structures. That is why the wooden structures of small residential buildings should be strengthened to be able to host this type of infrastructure.

Water in the war
Water in the war
The conflict drags on in the Palestinian territories adds the direct and indirect impacts of military activities a general environmental degradation caused by the collapse of administrative structures. The destruction of sewage and water increases the risk of groundwater contamination unprotected, which seriously affect the health of the populations concerned. Following the example of Gaza, degradation, which affects all areas experiencing prolonged confrontations, end up being more deadly than armed conflict who are responsible. They are more durable because the cessation of hostilities does not mean an immediate return to peace in an environment cleaner and safer.

Water in health GAZA
Alain Gresh, March 6 this year, stressed that Gaza endure the worst humanitarian situation since 1967. A correspondence Stevan Erlanger published by the New York Times on November 6, 2007 already mentioned the growing risks of a health crisis resulting from lack of maintenance of infrastructure-water treatment and sewage, due to security measures adopted by Israel on the import of energy, pumps, pipes and other spare parts necessary for the proper functioning of the networks in the territories under the control of Hamas.

Since May 2007, 149 public wells in Gaza have not been provided with enough fuel to operate, and have not been maintained because of lack of parts. Hence, 15% of the population of Gaza (225 000 people) do not receive the water for two hours a day.

An observation confirmed by an article by Mel Frykberg, published by the Middle East Times on January 2, 2008, which stated, moreover, that the water quality has not been tested for over a year because labs analysis could not import the chemicals needed for testing. Those made by the World Health Organization (WHO) several years ago had yet concluded that water from Gaza is not consumable without serious risks to health. The experts also warn that the lack of spare parts could soon lead one of 35 pumping stations wastewater to stop working in Gaza. This means that there will be a flow of sewage in homes and streets, with health problems that result.

Water in health Iraq
After the first Gulf War, 30% of the water reserves of Kuwait have been unusable for 10 years. There is now among the Kurdish civilian population, in 1987-1988 bombed by chemical and biological agents, rare cancers, birth defects among children, miscarriages, recurrent lung infections, neuro-psychiatric problems serious.

The weapons containing depleted uranium, used in conflicts in Kosovo, Serbia-Montenegro and Iraq, many still polluted sites.
The Iraqi children have been victims on three occasions conflicts that have affected the region for thirty years. The eight-year war with Iran in 80 years and the Gulf War in 1991, had already caused considerable damage to infrastructure in several countries. The destruction of many wetlands in the marshes of southern Iraq had led to migration of populations, but also the disappearance of certain languages and cultures deeply rooted in their natural environment.
